Maryland Vital Records:
The first act for the recording of births, Maryland marriages, and burials passed in 1650
(revised in 1654, 1658, 1678, and 1692). County clerks were required to record these Maryland vital records
in registers. The 1678 act exempted blacks, Indians, and mulattos, unless after 1692 their
mothers were white women. Only a few records are available at the Archives today.
The General Assembly in 1777 required Maryland marriage licenses to be obtained from the clerk of the county
court. The free databases located here Maryland State Archives Marriage Records
have Maryland marriage records from early Colonial days, 1640 to the present. There is a wealth of Maryland
vital records and other genealogical information here.
