Kansas Vital Records:
Kansas Marriage records and Kansas Divorce records are important sources of genealogical information.
The State Office of Vital Records is the main source for Kansas marriage records beginning on
May 1, 1913 and for Kansas divorce records beginning on July 1, 1951 .
Copies of these records are available through the Office of Vital Records,
Charles B. Curtis State Office Building, 1000 SW Jackson Street, Suite 120, Topeka,
KS 66612-1221; 785-296-1400.
Marriage licenses were issued in Kansas as early as the territorial period but were not
required by law until 1867. Kansas Historical Society reference staff have created an
index of marriages before 1867 from newspapers and other sources for some counties and this
list is available in their reading room.
Marriage licenses created from 1854 through April 1913 were kept by the county district court
where they were issued. Due to changes in county boundaries or mergers, researchers may need
to consult records from more than one county.
Couples were allowed to get licenses in one Kansas county and be married in another at that time.
These Kansas marriage records generally do not include the names of the parents unless their consent
was required.
