When conducting your search for UK free marriage records, it is very important that you find primary source information. This will allow you to verify and document family search material.

Certificates of birth, marriage, and death all contain very useful information that will allow you to document your family tree.

FREE - Birth, Marriage & Death Records

You can obtain a marriage certificate for England and Wales in various ways. Registration started in 1837.

You can get a certificate in person.

Indexes to the various certificates are held by the Family Records Center. Obtain the reference of the document and then apply using a form from the General Registry Office.

The General Registry Office have developed a secure site for ordering marriage records and other vital statistics documents. At the present time, this is limited to UK residents only, but may be expanded in the future. Check out the details at Certificate ordering service.

Ordering certificates by mail, fax, and telephone

If you cannot attend in person you can download a form at the General Registry Website. Marriage certificate ordering forms are available at Marriage Certificate Form.

All the Free Marriage Record sites I can find have been added and I sincerely hope that it will be of value to you in your genealogy search.

Unfortunately, sometimes those free records just don't get you all the information you need! If you hit that brickwall then you may have to try a "fee based" service. There are "free trial" offers available, so maybe you don't have to spend a cent (hurray!), as you can try the service free for a couple of weeks.
